Control and Management Architecture for Multipoint Videoconferencing over ATM Networks

چکیده
In this paper we describe a control and management architecture for an ATM-based Multipoint Videoconferecning (AMV) system. The service specification of the AMV system defines control functions that emulate human interactions, management functions that manage the videoconference and improve the service availability, and a web-based interface for easy control and management of the videoconference. To realize the AMV system, the required functional blocks are partitioned and a control and management architecture that contains a centralized server and distributed device managers is designed. After prototyping and then validating the AMV system on both ATM LAN and ATM WAN, we have the following observations and experiences: (i) Reliable multipoint communications are crucial in controlling and managing the multipoint videoconferencing. (ii) Coordination of the multipoint videoconferencing system must be maintained precisely to avoid the service disruption. (iii) The control and management architecture can well support our AMV system.

متن کاملA Flexible and Secure Multicast Architecture for ATM Networks
We describe our unifying architecture for multipoint-to-multipoint communications in ATM networks which meets the diverse requirement of group communications and permit a large degree of control on the multicast group. With an integrated use of a name space, the scheme allows scalable extension to large scale wide area multicast communications. We also enable exible control on routeing architec...
متن کاملSeam: Scalable and Eecient Atm Multicast
This paper proposes a multipoint-to-multipoint mul-ticast architecture for ATM networks. The necessity for such an architecture stems from the scalability requirements , both in terms of state to be maintained in the network and in terms of the group population dynamics, of a wide range of networking applications. We argue that approaches of using multicast servers or meshes of point-to-multipo...
متن کاملError Control for Reliable Multipoint Communication in ATM Networks
A new framework for support of reliable multipoint communication in ATM networks is presented. It is based on a new adaptation layer type, called the Reliable Multicast ATM Adaptation Layer (RMC-AAL), and on a new network element, called the Group Communication Server (GCS). A set of error control mechanisms tailored for multipoint communication are integrated into RMC-AAL and GCS. Error contro...

Over the last several years a variety of multipoint virtual circuit switching systems have been proposed for use in Asynchronous Transfer Mode ATM networks The inherent exibility of ATM networking and the desire to apply this technology to a wide range of di erent applications makes it impractical to rely on statistical tra c models when engineering a system This motivates a renewed interest in...
